Flightnight Nov 18 - Gorgeous scenery

The "Three Gorges" route in China is from ZUCK (Chongqing Jiangbei) via ZUWX (Wanzhou Wuqiao) as the midpoint break and then to ZHYC (Yichang Sanxia) as the destination. Neither ZUWX or ZHYC exist in FlightGear, so some custom scenery is needed for this FlightNight - you can get the scenery (1.9GB - which includes orthos) from here:

It will be an IFR flight: I'll Follow the River (Yangtze).

Your ride for the night, chosen from the FGUK hangar, will need to be comfortable at 200 knots. Meet up at 8 pm UK time at ZUCK (Jiangbei). Comms on TeamSpeak.

About the airport at Wanzhou Wuqiao (ZUWX)

The FG scenery is totally unusable for this even with orthos.

This custom scenery uses a 3D model for the entire airport, sitting on top of the FG mesh.

Try for as smooth a landing as possible to avoid passing through the model and crashing into the ground below it. It's a YASim thing. When approaching, do not attempt to touch down until after the red crosses.

There are three possible spawn points but it's probably easier to start the sim on a 3nm approach to runway 11 @3,500 ft.

Managed a messy but successful landing at ZUWX with the Spitfire VB but will probably be in the VooDoo P-38L for everyone else's safety's sake. ????

Also, what's the point of Emoji's if they don't show up ? ;)

  • And referring to the runway, it does actually look like that on Google maps.

I notice in the area some tectonic action ( rifts and ridges/rises to the NW and SE ) so that may explain the undulations in the runway. I guess FG has taken this and trying to make a good recreation of this has, in fact, made it worse.

Normally, we would be seeing this as a challenge rather than an inconvenience..... especially recounting the Warty 'Tough Landing' challenges from the past.

    See y'all later.

  • The new Wuqiao Airport was built by cutting into mountains and filling bottomlands. That's why it is so flat nowadays. Maybe the FG mesh is based on old data?

The P-38L is also my choice. It's one the few aircraft in the hangar that has operated in China. During WWII it was used by the Chinese Air Force as well as by the US. It is also capable of landing at ZUWX  with plenty of space/time to exit to the terminal without the need to backtrack.
