Pilot Models

So many amazing aircraft! So few good Pilot models inside them. Ok so its good to have someone to talk to! You bonny lads create such terrific aeroplanes, but miss out on the men inside them. Ww1 is Good, Ww2 has zero RAF blue, ect. I dont have the skills to sort it, but you do. Men or machines. Lets show Flight Gear, its who's in the cockpit, not the airframe!

  • Good quality pilot models in FG land are hard to come by

  • It does my head in that the FGUK RAF Lightning has a French Air Force pilot!

We had a play around with "Makehuman" a few years ago, which is brilliant at generating people. I also took some images of flying clothing to apply as textures, my results were average as I'm no expert. Makehuman produces a flexible model with a movable rig/skeleton, but unfortunately FG doesn't have the capability to "flex" surfaces, so the skeleton couldn't be used to move the arms/legs. The Makehuman model could be cut into pieces, so the knees/elbows could be roughly aligned for some small movement?

I have a collection of (mainly British) flying clothing from the cold war era to modern day, flying coveralls, helmets, oxygen masks, PECs, life preservers, boots, gloves etc.. and am willing to provide photographs and measurements to anyone willing to create a 3D person. see: https://scottbouch.com/cockpitfest-2021.htm

Here is some of my research toward getting the equipment right for the application (ie, specific aircraft and era, this kit wasn't very "generic"): https://scottbouch.com/aircrew-uk-flying-equipment-index.htm

I did have a rough go with photogrammetry recently to 3D model a Mk.4 flying helmet (used from the early 1980's to today), the results were pretty good apart from shiny surfaces. https://forum.fguk.me/discussion/743/photogrammetry-experiments#latest
