UK digital ID cards
For anyone who's not yet seen it, there is a petition to sign demonstrating opposition to the UK Labour governments ID card/database: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/730194?ref=ed_direct
Under the Labour ID card regime, we have a simple choice: privacy, or pay. You can't have both.

Signed, Unacceptable . Been reading up before your post on this, if ever asked for ID of this kind, I intend to reply 24615621. Such numbers have to be earned and kept. See you at the barricades m8!
'It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.'
Better man than me said that.
Maybe....Sir William Wallace ?
A letter, dated 6 April 1320 at Arbroath, written by Scottish barons and addressed to Pope John XXII. It constituted King Robert I's response to his excommunication for disobeying the pope's demand in 1317 for a truce in the First War of Scottish Independence. The letter asserted the antiquity of the independence of the Kingdom of Scotland, denouncing English attempts to subjugate it.
Wallace, was Wallace... Scotland does not need nor require Hollywood Sir.

I'm going to make myself a bit unpopular here but please read to the end.
I think the petition against the ID card is a bit pointless.
Anyone who is worried about the digital ID card probably already has more information held by the Government than they would ever hold in a Digital ID card.
Currently, as a British Citizen, I hold a passport, a driving license and run a small business, I also have a doctor and a dentist provided by the NHS - not an unusual combo.
From the passport and driving license the govt know who I am, where I live, where I was born and If I have any children, from my national insurance number they know how much I earn, how much tax I pay and a list of all the jobs I've ever worked.
From my NHS records they know my blood type, what medication I'm on, how many teeth have fillings and roughly how tall I am and what I weigh.
They also know what cars I drive. How many people are on my payroll and other boring stuff.
People claim the issue here is that it isn't currently tied together? well I'm afraid you're wrong:
From my volunteer work I've done plenty with Search and Rescue teams. There have been countless incidents where someone has gone missing and, within no more than an hour, the Police have available to them and the SAR people a full description of the person, medical records, business address information and CCTV images of their vehicle moving across the county and buying fuel, and where their car was parked from their cellular data on their mobile phone - all near as damn it live.
Should anyone out there think that the government doesn't already hold the information on a Digital ID and can access it within what is realistically minutes then I'm afraid you're not quite up to speed on what they do and how.
The ONLY people that will find this new Digital ID an unacceptable intrusion are those who have never had a passport, driving license, worked a tax-paying job or accessed an NHS Dentist or Doctor.
Anything else they want to add to those services data collection, they could do within minutes and without anyone even asking a single question about it.
Go on, think of some information you don't want the digital ID to hold about you, and I guarantee the govt already has it.
Yep fair points m8.
Totally agree, Alex....we have the new ID cards like over two years.
And...of course I accept the cup, Actor....vote me for President... : )
Ok, your now President. Anyone argues with you about that, tell them that I Napoleon Bonaparte says you are. ;)
Gov has responded basically saying the same standard press release - Its coming, you will have it, thats the end of it.
No debate or discussion and clearly brakes the guidelines that the Gov Petitions website was set up to do.
I wont have a smart phone when this is introduced, I will go back to my old CAT indestructible phone which can make calls and send a text message at a push. I dont need nor want any further digital ways of tracking me and classifying me. I dont need an app on my phone to "Work" im self employed and never intend to work for an employer ever again.
Phone is a good idea, Is that how the digital ID will be stored on, or a chipped card?
Its a mandatory phone app, managed by Tony Blairs son of all people.
Looks like I'm ditching Galaxy Flip for a non smartphone, think their still for sale. Thank you Stuart.
Nokia 105, on its way! only 13.99.
You'll be buggered when you need to use your on phone authenticator for your Govt Gateway account when your accountant needs to authorise it every year when tax goes digital later this year/next (depending on when your tax year ends)
and all the other things you need 2 factor authentication for of course.
As a small business owner you've got no chance - we'll be forced to have smartphones and apps if we like it or not!

Alex, yes I agree with your points. I think for me at least the point of this petition is responding to the forced, non-democratic way in which we were 'told'. Effectively a middle finger up to 'the man'.
So for me, how will this play out? I run an Ubuntu phone. No way of operating a mainstream app.
They suggest alternative methods for elderly or homeless people, which in my mind is quite a discriminatory and presumptuous statement, tarring several groups with the same brush, and completely ignoring the people like me who are interested in keeping as private as possible regarding data privacy. Blindly assuming that if you are neither elderly, nor homelss you will have an Apple or Android phone, and it will be up to date enough to run thir new app. I sit outside of this presumed half baked logic, as do many others.
Basically, as a person who has willingly paid tax since I started working at the age of 17, never put a foot out of line, I'm now faced with a choice to either have my deep rooted rights to privacy comprimised, or will be unable to work legally, only able to work cash in hand, and not pay any more tax.
I wonder if getting a job based from anothr country would help to avoid this nonsesne, or maybe becoming a sole trader and contracting?
I see Alex's points, however, there is one further point to consider. How many times have we heard about the government employee leaving a laptop on a train/bus... Or the data breaches... Why place yourself on yet another database that could be susceptible to attack? In my mind its damage limitation by reducing the number of entities that could potentially leak your data, and minimising the data they hold. And when has a government ever actually implemented aything like this successfully without mishaps...? Sorry, but I find it hard to put my trust into them. Just look at the recent Horizon Post Office scandal!!
Presenlty the distriuted/individual nature of databases you described is potentially safer, as not all eggs are in one basket. You'd have to hack the DVLA, the Passport agency, tax office, department for pensions, local council, our Church's safe, mobile phone companies, banks, credit card companies, GP surgery, NHS hospitals, in order to gather all those records into one handy place.
It sucks being told to go againt a deep belief. I'm not religious, but i can see how religious people feel when people cut into their beliefs.
