FlightNight 18th July.

Ive not had time to plan anything and I have arrivals after 8:30 on Saturday night so probably not able to fly ether.

So, the default is to meet at EGOD, Fly what ever you like and amuse yourselves.

  • Just to add to Stuart's note above. I do feel guilty about there not being anything planned this week, and I know we've always maintained that the fallback is 8pm UK time at EGOD - perhaps we need to exercise that a bit more.

We're on week 28 of the year, and of that so far, there's been 14 flights planned by Stuart, 11 by me and 3 by others.

Especially given we are now 17 years into FlightNight it does feel like we need some fresh ideas to keep people interested. It's getting clear that if the idea isn't "exciting" then the turnout is low and that adds to the pressure.

Hope everyone enjoys this week just flying about and perhaps that's exactly what we need.

I don't think it's the excitement level that is the problem. It's Summer Time, the UK & Europe is in a 3-4 week Heatwave so I guess people are out in it BBQ/Beach/being with family etc.

FGUK is where some of the premiere/most developed Aircraft in FlightGear are, people should be banging on the door to join in FlightNights, maybe time zones etc are the problem as we do have a diverse audience ?

I mean I don't think it's a lack of interest - there is a big hole left by VooDoo's absence, I know, I miss Him - and BIG thanks to Stuart & Alex and the others for what they have done so far.

Don't see EGOD as a fallback copout. There's the Mach Loop scenario - trainee helicopter pilots can do circuits, you can practice carrier landings on 17/35, there is some good scenery around the area for a casual sortie, try different aircraft, try A2A refuelling the list is endless really. It just needs 2 of you and at least someone with a powerful enough PC and YouTube account to run the recording and post it.

As I've said before - I would LOVE to run a FlightNight but my setup is in the Lounge and the wife is in here relaxing/watching TV/browsing on her tablet etc.

There are therefore only 3 ways I can run the Night:

I move my setup to the bedroom - run the night - then move it all back again afterwards. SLIM CHANCE

Get Divorced. MODERATE CHANCE (BUT INCREASINGLY SO)

Win the lottery and buy another place with more rooms. NO CHANCE

There is a Fourth way - but that involves Prison Time.... INCREASINGLY MORE CHANCE

    Thanks for understanding.

I'm up for a 'FlightNight Ideas' sticky post for people who can't run it but have ideas that Flight Leaders could take on board/jiggle about/spark something ? (Maybe Alex/Stuart has thoughts on this/create it ?)

    Many Thanks

    Porcy/Piglet

  • I have plenty of ideas I just dont have plenty of time in Summer months. Also some of my ideas require some of the development projects I have been working on to be completed, and working. These are not going to get done in the Summer months ether.

  • I think we understand that, Stuart. We know this is your busiest time of the year and any spare minutes would be spent on development stuff. Showcasing the latest 'Kit' is important for you and could get new people to join FlightNight.

As I said above, I don't think it's a lack of interest. People have 'people' things to do, not just flying.

Also - 'Free Fly at EGOD' should not be viewed as a bad thing. If there was more Flight Leaders, at some point none of them would be available, it's the law of averages. It's good to have a fallback option, it relieves the pressure on those that can lead a FlightNight.....

  • Love the idea of 'FlightNight ideas'.

Would be nice to fly more often, but I changed my work place and now I often have to work nightshifts. Esp. at weekends 12h. So I can't fly with you, what's really sad.

  • There you go.

    People things.

Here's something a bit impromptu. We fly around the area I live, roughly the Golden Horseshoe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Horseshoe. CYTZ -> CYHM -> CYFD -> CDU9 -> CNQ3 -> -79.074402 -> CYOO -> CYKZ -> -79.295209 -> CYTZ or CYYZ. An idea for today or another time. Flying something that goes about 120 to fill the time properly.
